Dan & Poppy
Poppy and Dan’s big day was set at Lympne Castle in Kent amid perfect autumn weather in November. I love weddings which are set in the late autumn or winter. The colours of the trees, the mist in the air, the smell of a wooden fire and everything else that comes with those crisp, fresh days is so atmospheric.
But autumn and winter weddings certainly come with their challenges. The sun sets early, rain can stop everything and it gets cold quick! When it comes to the photos, however, I know how to use the natural light to capture the authentic ambiance instead of relying on unflattering and uncontrollable lights.
Dan and Poppy decided to have their pre-wedding shoot closer to their big day so the photos would have the same, consistent autumn feel as the ones on the big day.
My coverage as normal started with bridal prep. In the morning I drove down to the stunning house that Poppy and all her bridesmaids were getting ready at. While Poppy was having her hair finished by Vicki Lord I started to photograph all the important details, paying particular attention to all the final adjustments to her wonderful headpiece.
Once everyone was dressed and ready, we headed up the hill to Lympne Castle.
My partner James was with the guys, capturing all the important moments with the groom as he got ready.
The stunning autumnal light which rained into the room where the groomsmen were getting ready really helped to give these images a dramatic edge!
Once all the guests had arrived, it was time for Poppy, her daughter and a flurry of bridesmaids to make their entrance. The light coming in through the windows really helped to lift the bride and groom from their background and helps the focus to stay on them.
After the ceremony we headed outside for a few group photos, I take my time to correctly arrange and place everyone so they look their best, this really helps to correspond a connection between family members and it is a really important way to document everyone look at their best!
As time was short we only managed to shoot photos of the bride and groom for 10 minuites before dinner was served, we still managed to capture a great collection of portraits for Dan and poppy. These images really set themselves apart, especially with the stunning autumn mist creeping in from behind the trees lit by the sun from behind. I love shooting at this time of the day - the light is magical and helps to create breathtaking photos.
Once all the guests made their way inside into the spectacular grand hall of Lympne Castle, the bride and groom were welcomed in and the speeches started after the main course was served.
Having two photographers really helps at this point. One of us is able to photograph reactions from guests while covering the top table, while the other can cover the guests from around the room.
When the sunset lit up the sky, it was the perfect opportunity to capture a gorgeous, dramatic photo of the bride and groom. Afterwards we ventured into a remote, pitch black part of the castle where I used strobes to shape the light onto the bride and groom and create these truly unique images.
After the food, all the guests were invited into another room for drinks and the cutting of the cake. As this space is so dark in winter, we use some additional lighting to capture all the reactions and really freeze the action.
In the other room, I had my fully automated photo booth set up. Requiring just a few metres of space, guests were using it all night to pose however they want, wear any of the props and take as many photos as they want.
Once the band had set up, the bride and groom wandered onto the centre of the dance floor for the first dance. I always take my time to light the dance floor to ensure the photos I take are bright and vibrant and full of colour, while maintaining the ambiance of the rest of the room.
As the band had their break, we ventured away with the bride and groom to capture a few more individual portraits for both of them. It was a great way to end such an amazing wedding.
Dan and Poppy chose my ultimate package and were presented with over 800 images of the day, including 190 from the photo booth and over 100 from their pre-wedding shoot.
"Thank you for being not only a great photographer but an awesome help and stand in bridesmaid too haha!!! We can't wait to see all the photos... The Photobooth was such a hit! " - Dan & Poppy
